Welcome to the 52nd post in the How I Wear My series!
The dazzle and glamour of the season are a big part of why this time of year is such a visual delight so what better way to partake in the glitz and the glory than to pin a bit of it somewhere on your outfit?
With that in mind, Jill of Everything Just So and I decided to devote December’s “How I Wear My” to that bejeweled accessory that is making a comeback in a big way—the brooch!
Jill from Everything Just So starts us off with her stylish brooch look. Jill tells us, “I am wearing a J. Crew coat, L’Wren Scott sunglasses, and carrying my mini Chanel bag. My vintage brooch is one I bought for $14 at a local thrift shop. The stone color is known as aurora borealis and is the most beautiful shade of iridescent blue.”
What a stunning blue brooch on a stunning woman! I love the way Jill positioned her brooch on her scarf. I’ll have to try that!
Jacqueline of Petite Silver Vixen wears a brooch that’s quite special to her and tells us, “I’m very pleased about the choice for this month’s series as it gives me a chance to wear my oldest and most beloved brooch – a panda. I’ve had him for about 30 years and he’s steeped in sentimental value! I’ve loved pandas since I was given a cuddly panda bear one Christmas at age four. When I was about 9, I was taken to London Zoo to see the famous Chinese pandas – Chia Chia and Ching Ching – as a birthday treat!
Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun shows us an edgy brooch look and says, “I have this antique art nouveau sterling silver brooch that I haven’t worn in years, so thanks so much for the motivation to get it out and wear it again! The design seems vaguely disturbing, right? A conversation piece for sure! I wore it with a vintage coat and some edgy booties.”
What a glamorous gothic brooch. It especially looks great with the pewter buttons on Dawn Lucy’s coat!
Hang of POUM! La Mode is glowing in her winter white ensemble featuring a few brooches she bought thrifting. She tells us “I have not had the chance to wear them a lot but thanks to you, I got to sport them again with pleasure!”
Susan of High Heels in the Wilderness wears a beautiful blur brooch from the 1950s and says, “I usually wear this on my navy Smythe boyfriend jacket. But I’m really liking it on this cream sweater from Gap these days. I have quite a few vintage brooches. Some were worn by my mum or grandmother. Others I picked up at vintage stores. I can never resist a lovely brooch.”
They are hard to pass up, especially a gorgeous one like Susan’s!
Trina of Tea Time With Trina wears her brooches a little differently, on her knit cap. She tells us, “Simply pin them on a beanie and it instantly spices things up.” Such a great look for the holidays or anytime the weather calls for a cap.
Pam of Over 50 Feeling 40 wears a bursting star brooch with champagne colored pearls and rhinestones. She tells a cute story about having to have this particular brooch: “The year before Coldwater Creek closed, I saw this brooch in a store window at Christmastime. It was their last one and I loved it so much, I had the sales associate climb into the window to get it for me. I am excited to pull it out this year for my holiday outfits!”
Greetje of No Fear of Fashion wears a super cool and “eye-catching” brooch (sorry, I couldn’t help myself) and tells us, “This brooch is simple. Plastic even, I think. Boy oh boy… it can make nearly every outfit look modern. I wish I had more of such modern brooches instead of all my vintage costume jewellery. Nice but much more dangerous. If I am not careful they can make me look very old.”
Not only do I love this brooch but I love where Greetje pinned it!
Naomi of Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda wears a lovely pearl brooch, placed at the neckline of silky black top. The brooch adds lots of elegance to her beautiful blouse.
Tamera of Tamera Beardsley wears a necklace she made herself out of brooches. Isn’t it a stunner? She says, “I love gathering brooches by color and concept to make fabulous statement necklaces! I even have a DIY for the necklaces on my blog. For me making necklaces with vintage brooches is a lovely way to breathe new life into cherished pieces.”
Anett of Tall Girl’s Fashion also wears her brooch on a hat and says, “I tend to wear my brooches on my silk scarves or on my hat. This hat originally had an awful plastic flower glued to the side so I tore that off and replaced it with a vintage bird pin that I once bought in London. I love how the pin brings a sense of whimsy and femininity to the quite masculine hat.”
As a bit of a hat collector myself, I will have to give this fashion trick a try!
Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo adds whimsy to her look with a vintage bee brooch she pinned to the collar of a turtleneck. I love the way her look is both vintage and modern at once.
Ana of Mrs. American Made wears a circle shaped brooch on her patterned blouse and says, “Sometimes I use a brooch to adjust the size of a garment in a pretty way – kind of like a safety pin but more attractive. This lovely #madeinUSA VelvetTees print top is a bit too big in the neckline for me so I adjust with a amethyst wreath brooch that belonged to my mother (and I appropriated years ago) so it does double duty. I do love the vintage jewelry!”
A great tip reminding us that brooches can be functional as well as beautiful!
HappyFace313 is wearing a beautiful Christmas tree brooch and says, “I purchased this brooch more than 10 years ago here in Vienna and wear it every December. I like that it has two little rhinestone chains that move around and look like fairy lights. It adds extra sparkle to the season and a bit to me, too. I’m also wearing my Neige d’Antan jacquard scarf – also a December “must”.”
A festive and sophisticated ensemble. Perfect for December!
Julie of Kay and Star joins us for the first time and says, “These are my favorite vintage brooches. The large star with the pearl was my grandmother’s and the black and white was my mother’s. The last one I bought at a vintage store with my oldest daughter. I love to wear them on my wool moto jacket that I’ve had since college. I’m always a fan of more is more – so why not wear them all!”
Sometimes more is more, especially when it comes to shiny, sparkly, pretty things!
Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style wears a pink brooch and says, “I’m wearing my brooch to add some color to my outfit. I wanted a little pop of pink color, so thus my brooch, shoes, and bracelet fit the bill! This brooch has an identical sister in my mom’s house, so we try not to wear them at the same time! It’s not an antique and it doesn’t have significant story attached to it, but I love the color!!”
It adds a fun, feminine pop of color to Jodie’s look!
The holidays just seem to call for rhinestones and sparkle, don’t they? I think a whimsical or elegant brooch is just the thing to make an ordinary outfit festive and fun.
I wear the brooch against darker clothing when I want it to stand out. For a more subtle look, I will pin it on a winter white coat or sweater.
For January we are going to focus on another accessory that is an easy way to add a bit of style to an outfit—gloves! Whether they are made of fur-trimmed leather or fashioned from smooth silk, whether you wear opera-length stunners for a night on the town or a smaller pair trimmed with bows to brighten your day, join us for “How I Wear My: Gloves.”
Send photos to email@example.com by January 5, 2016 and be sure to tell us a little bit about your gloves and outfit!
Thank you to my How I Wear My partner, Jill, and all the stylish participants! We love seeing the looks you send to us each month. Be sure to take a look at lots more fabulous brooch outfits over at Jill’s blog, Everything Just So!
It’s hard to believe another year is coming to an end so soon. Last year Jill and I put together special How I Wear My posts in which we picked our personal favorite look from each month on our own blogs. We’ve decided to do it again for 2015. Look for it on December 23rd!
Make it a rich day!
