The Grand Re-Opening Party at Trefethen Family Vineyards

May 11, 2017 by Adrienne Shubin 1 Comment

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the Grand Re-Opening Party at Trefethen Family Winery with my husband, Bill.

About Trefethen Family Vineyards

Trefethen is located in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll district, just south of the town of Yountville. On August 24, 2014, the Napa earthquake hit shortly before 3:30 a.m. with a powerful 6.0 magnitude. I remember it all too well! Trefethen’s tasting room, an historic building built in 1886, shifted 4 feet during the quake.

After a meticulous 2.5 year renovation, which included a seismic retrofit, the tasting room re-opened last weekend on May 6th. Its opening was celebrated with a wonderful party.

Along with the newly renovated tasting room, the Trefethen family is also celebrating 50th year of ownership in 2018. Since 1968 the Trefethen family has run the winery. After nearly five decades, the third generation of Trefethen’s – siblings Hailey and Lorenzo – are preparing to take the helm of the family business. Hailey spearheaded the recent renovations at the winery and will focus on winery and vineyard operations, while Lorenzo will turn his attentions to marketing and will be the face of the brand.

The Property

You will find lush greenery, manicured gardens, mature trees and vast vineyards on the property at Trefethen Family Vineyards.

Trefethen has two vineyards: the Main Ranch on the valley floor and the Hillside Vineyard near the Mayacamas mountains.

The Grand Re-Opening Party

After we checked in at the entrance and got our keepsake wine glasses, we went inside the spacious courtyard in front of the winery. There were several stations set up for guests to taste Trefethen’s wine and pair it with delicious nibbles.

Giant photographs of the winery throughout the years were backdrops behind the food and wine tables. You can see more photos of the earthquake damage here. It was quite dramatic!

Trefethen grows all their own grapes, which means all their wines are considered estate wines. They grow Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. I am crazy about their Dry Riesling and went back for seconds.

There were plenty of gourmet finger foods for guests to enjoy with their wine. I could have easily made a meal of the stuffed mushrooms. They were delicious!

The party had a vintage carnival theme with acrobats, live music and performers on stilts like Carlos here. I finally met someone I can look up to!

What I Wore

To this festive springtime fête I wore a black off-the-shoulder dress I bought recently. I love the versatility of this frock and the lightweight gauze material makes it ideal for warm days. I also like the longer length, hitting mid-calf.

I wore my dress with strappy black sandals with an ankle tie, added a touch of color with a KayandStar necklace in a turquoise and cognac shades and carried a Mulberry Bayswater bag, also in cognac. Handbag aside, my outfit came in under $150, including shoes!

The New Tasting Room

After enjoying the wine, food and entertainment outside the tasting room, we decided to head inside to the renovated tasting room, located upstairs in the main building.

In addition to being the tasting room, the building stores many wine barrels. Save for the smell of fresh wood, you might not know the building has been recently renovated. It has retained its authentic 19th century feel. In fact, the historical building was rebuilt using 85% of its original material.

Bill noticed this clock hanging on support beam damaged by the earthquake which stopped at 3:25, the time the Napa quake hit nearly three years ago. The Trefethen’s chose to leave the clock and the damaged beam in place.

The large tasting room is on an elevated platform on the second floor.

Just below that, there is an open area with high ceilings.

And an enormous window that not only brings in lots of natural light…

but also provides breathtaking views of the courtyard and estate vineyards.

What a wonderful day! The weather was perfect, the food and wine were top notch, all the guests were enjoying themselves and I even got Bill to take a photo with me!

Trefethen Family Winery

Congratulations to the Trefethen family on the completion of their renovation and for 50 successful years becoming one of Napa Valley’s most notable, family-owned wineries!

Trefethen Family Winery is located just north of the city of Napa at 1160 Oak Knoll Avenue. Visit their website for more information or call 866-895-7696. Tasting fees range from $25 to $45 per person.
